Group Activity: Group dinner Thursday

We're organizing a joint dinner with the LHC13 group in downtown Santa Barbara, probably Los Agaves.

Whale watching (probably an afternoon excursion, 2.5 hour boat ride, leaves from Santa Barbara, $50 adults / $30 children, condorexpress.com). Some pictures from the tour we took on April 28 can be found here.

Hearst Castle (day trip, about 150 miles north via drive along the coast)

Wine tasting, Sunday 12th May:
$50 Santa Barbara Wine Tasting Tour, see first entry on http://www.captainjackstours.com/rates.html. The tour starts between 11am and 11.30am and includes transportation to 3 different wine tasting destinations. Pre-booking is required, so please email Charlotte Strege by no later than 6pm Wednesday if you would like to join.

Cinco de Mayo Festival

Sunday, May 5
Every year thousands of locals and tourists descend on De La Guerra Plaza for Santa Barbara's annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. Enjoy great food from vendors in the plaza and a full stage of live music all weekend.

1st Thursday and group dinner with LHC13

The LHC13 group is organizing an outing to the 1st Thursday arts and cultural event in downtown Santa Barbara followed by a group dinner. Sign up on the LHC13 social events page.

Condor Express
We will take the 12:00 pm ride, lasts 2.5 hours. At this moment (4:00 pm Friday), the boat has 12 slots already reserved and a capacity of 73, so I (Felix) will make a reservation for our entire group at 4:00 pm Saturday. Cost is $50 / adult, $30 / children. Let's plan on having a carpool leaving Isla Vista and a separate carpool leaving Goleta. The driver of each carpool will determine where the pick-up and final drop-off locations. Carpools will leave their respective locations at 10:30 am and meet in downtown Santa Barbara for a small lunch. After lunch we'll head to the Santa Barbara harbor for the 12:00 pm launch. Please sign up before April 27th 4:00 pm.

Area Restaurants

Arnoldi's Cafe - Little Italian restaurant in historic stone building from 1930's with seating and bocce ball out back.
Beachside Bar & Cafe, down the hill from KITP overlooking Goleta beach.
The Boathouse - Seafood place right on Hendry's beach.
Brewhouse - Pretty much what you expect - beer and hearty food. For large groups, they require a pre-selected menu with only 4 entree choices.
Carlitos - Nice Mexican restaurant on State Street.
Edomasa - Sushi.
Olio Pizzeria - Highest rated pizza place in town, but kind of pricey (up to $20 for individual pie).
Opal - California/Fusion.
Trattoria Vittoria - Italian. Will only take large groups either early (before 5:30) or late (after 8:00).

Beach Barbecue

Goleta Beach, a short walk from KITP, has barbecue pits that you can use. Reservations are usually not required unless you have a very large group and need a certain area. Please note: beach bonfires are not permitted anywhere in Santa Barbara County. (They are only permitted in certain places anywhere in California.)

1st Thursday

2012 Concerts in the Park

  • It’s one of Santa Barbara’s best summer traditions….. come find out first-hand what brings up to 5,000 people down to Chase Palm Park on Thursday nights during the months of June, July and August! Make sure that you dust off your dancing shoes, pack up a picnic dinner and your friends and family, and come celebrate summer and some great free music concerts in Santa Barbara’s beautiful Chase Palm Park! Located right on Cabrillo Blvd. along the gorgeous Santa Barbara waterfront. Don’t miss it!

The Met: Live in HD

  • The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts HD simulcasts of operas to movie theaters all over the world. The live performances are Saturday matinees in New York, so they start here at 9:55am and are shown locally at the historic Arlington Theater in downtown SB and, in a smaller venue at Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West in Montecito. It will be rebroadcast again at Hahn Hall at 6:00pm on Saturday and at 2:00pm on Sunday.

Jazz & Folk Music

  • SB has but one place that features jazz and folk: SOhO Restaurant & Music Club .They have decent food if you want to eat before/during a performance.

Sport Activities

  • Anyone interested in swimming/running (maybe biking if nice bikes available for renting) or playing some sports like table tennis or soccer at the Rec.Cen. of UCSB !? Drop a line here or pop up at my office
